Bruce Turner Award Logo.PNG

Jan Jebson Malimban
Urology Specialist Nurse, East And North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

Bruce Turner was a well known and loved BAUN member, a nurse consultant at the Homerton Hospital, London, and BAUN Education lead for many years.

Our beloved friend and colleague passed away in 2016 after a terminal diagnosis of cancer. He was determined to continue his mission to educate and impassion urological nurses and left instructions that a legacy should continue in his name.

His legacy has been used to establish The Bruce Turner Award: an annual prize which will provide a fully funded place (transport within the UK, accommodation and conference fees) to the BAUN annual conference.

 Sarah Henderson Best Poster Award

Patricia Musuka, Urology Nurse Practitioner, Hampshire Hospitals

'Self Directed Trial Without Catheter :Improving the patient's  journey ,reducing hospital costs and avoiding waiting time delays.'

This year myself (Anthony Shanahan) had the privilege of judging  the Sarah Henderson Award.  The quality of the posters were of a high standard and we were both proud of every poster submitted this year

The posters submitted comprised of awareness, educational and research based pieces of work. Their chosen topics all related to aspects of Urology Nursing that no doubt benefitted every reader.  The topics ranged from Catheter Care, Management of MS and Spina Bifida, Patient awareness and prostate biopsies. These posters covered most of the sub-speciality aspects within urology nursing

The reasons this poster was chosen as the winner was firstly, the layout and the way it was written was of an exceptional high standard.  The topic was very important and we feel that it would relate to urology nurses nationally and internationally.  This piece of work showed that a lot of time and effort was put into achieving this research.

We are hoping to see the full and final version as an article within the IJUN.

Award for Best Oral Presentation

Louisa Fleure, Consultant Nurse, Guys and St Thomas NHSTrust

'The Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) Education program in the UK'

The quality of the oral presentations this year, has as usual been extremely high standard and this made judging both challenging but also pleasurable as well.  The winner was chosen because they were very eloquent, they met the requirements for the time keeping, and ticked all the boxes on a subject that is very important to all urology nurses up and down the country.

Graeme Bathie, Urology (MacMillan) Specialist Nurse, Ninewells Hospital

This award is given to a nurse who has made a significant difference in the lives of their prostate cancer patients, providing exceptional care during a truly difficult period.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who nominated a nurse for this prestigious award. We had numerous outstanding candidates, but Graeme Bathie stood out with his exceptional care for prostate cancer patients.

Graeme grew up in Dundee and studied nursing at Abertay University. Since registering as a nurse in 2000, he has worked in surgical admissions and went on to be a charge nurse in the surgical high-dependency unit. He is now the lead urology nurse for prostate cancer in Tayside, working with prostate cancer patients every day, supporting men as they navigate their journey.

Graeme lives with his wife Louise and teenage daughter Freya. He loves attending Dundee United football games and enjoys socialising with friends, and attending gigs and shows.

Visit Prostate Cancer UK's website for more information.

Rachel Leaver Award

Alison O'Leary

This medal is to celebrate and recognise a legacy of exceptional and continued contribution to British Urology Nursing.
Rachel Leaver was a founder member of BAUN and had remained strongly involved with the association over the years of the organisation’s existence. So committed was she to the mission and values of BAUN that the heart of the association itself reflects so much of what was important to Rachel.
Rachel’s energy and enthusiasm kept the attention of all audience members throughout every talk she delivered. Her love of teaching really shone during her educational presentations and although she had retired from her clinical role at UCLH, Rachel remained engaged in her work as an educator through the university and through BAUN.
Rachel’s support of the BAUN further extended when she became Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Urological Nursing. Here her passion for research and the sharing of best practice came to the fore. As a first-class communicator, Rachel’s gift for writing facilitated the education of thousands of nurses globally. Indeed, it is very likely that you yourself have read some of her work as she was a very prolific author and contributed greatly to the body of knowledge related to urological nursing.
Rachel’s love of life, urology and nursing radiated from her in all that she did. We will show our gratitude to her by continuing to provide the highest standards of education, networking and professional development and honour her contribution and memory through this award.
